This small park protects one of the few remaining stands of Gallery forest in The Gambia. For its small size it contains an enormous amount of flora and fauna. For birders it is a must with many species hardly found outside this reserve, like turacos and bluebills. We hired a somewhat expensive guide to show us some of these species. In the end it was worth the money, cos we would have missed several of them if he had not pointed them to us. The Western Red Colobus monkey is also quite easily seen in this reserve. Its proximity to the coast and urban areas are an advantage and disadvantage at the same time. Because it is so close by, it can easily be visited from the major coastal resorts, as we did by bike. However, human encroachment is one of the most important threats of this reserve. |
Only 200 meters away from the resorts in Kololi this small patch of coastal forest is worthwhile visiting. Both the theatened Western Red Colobus and more common Vervet Monkey are easily spotted. In addition, bee-eaters and rollers patrol the area. To get away from the busy resorts, this is a perfect place. |
Several Fishing Villages dot the coast of Western Gambia of which Tanji is one. It is a nice place to see daily life of the fishermen and women. Close by is the Tanji Village Museum, which has some local musical instruments and other cultural items on display. The nice thing is that the people running the muesum will show you how to play the instruments, work on metals and how to handle weaving machines. |
Banjul is a very small capital mainly due to the fact that it lies on a peninsula which doesn't allow it to expand. Now most people live outside Banjul in not very inviting towns like Serrekunda, Fajara and Kotu. However, there are some sites of interest. We visited a holy crocodile pool, where these 'sem- domesticated' creatures are fed. If you have'nt seen crocs before at close range, this is your chance. We also visited a primary school, which was much more fun. Blowing bubbles always does the trick! |
