Together with my parents we went on holiday to California in the summer of 2004. With San Francisco and Los Angeles, California harbours world famous cities, as well as some fantastic national Parks like Yosemite and Sequoia. In the Southern Part of California the heat can be a bit overwhelming. When we visited the national parks, they were a bit overcrowded, which was definately a drawback to visit them during high season. Nontheless, we enjoyed our holiday very much, but recommend others with interest in nature to visit California during spring or autumn. |
Rianne visited New York for a couple of days, while I was at the conference meeting in Woods Hole further east. She found the city quite overwelming, a dazzling place. There's so much to see and do. She went for the usual suspects in terms of touristic highlights inlcuding, taking a ferry To Staten Island that passes the Statue of liberty, visiting the Guggenheim museum, going to the roof of Rockerfeller Center for some great views, going to the Bronx Zoo, visiting Ground Zero and strolling through Central Park. She particularly liked Central Park, to get away from all the crowds. |
As one of the oldest cities and the first capital of the United States, Philadelphia has a lot of history. The old city center is packed with historic buildings and items of which the Independence Hall in which the Declaration of independence was signed and the Liberty Bell are the most well known. There are several nice museums as well on American history as well as American and European art. Philadelphia is fairly well negociatable by foot and harbours many nice cafés and restaurants, which makes it a pleasant city to explore. |
Washington DC is not the most lively city there is, but it probably one of t the most important ones, as the government of the USis seated here. The main tourist draw and most important part of the city is 'The Mall'. It's a long stretch of greenery along which many important buildings are located. Captitol Hill, The White House, Lincoln & Washington Memorial and a whole bunch of museums can be found in this area. Unfortunately we only had a morning to rush through all these sites. The fine museums alone can keep you busy for a day or two. There is a natural history museum, Aircraft museum, several art museums and the National Archives which among other things has the constitution and the declaration of independence on display. |
The Adirondack State Park encompasses a vast expanse of forests, lakes, swamps ad mountains. In the winter it's good for skiing either cross country or downhill (The winter olympics were held in Lake Placid some years ago), and during the summer there are plenty of option for hiking and canoeing. We visited this area for some interviews for a postdoc position at the Trudeau Instistute in Saranac Lake. We haven't decided yet, but we might end up here for a couple of years after our PhD.... |
